I found the Sons of Ben and my wife and I, who are members now, want to attend the game in NY coming up. I wanted to know if there was a bus trip or if we were responsible for getting there ourselves. I want also to be able to sit with everyone else!! I know Im new, but Im running into nothing but problems trying to get to this game!! If someone can help me that would be great. Thank you for your time.

Great game -- loved being in the supporters' section. Loved the win, despite two goals that were very close to being Own Goals.

But I had a couple of my students (5th and 6th grade girls, serious soccer players) sitting with family not far away. And when a DC player was injured and the SOBs began chanting "Cart HER off" I wondered what my girls were supposed to make of that. Girls always make more of a fuss about an injury? There's something wrong with being a girl? Can't a guy be scorned without being labeled female, as though there's something intrinsically wrong with that? C'mon, guys -- you don't have to be total SOBs! What message will your daughters get from this? I'm not a rabid feminist, happy to be a Son of Ben, but not happy with that chant. Let's find another way to offend injured opponents, get more women into the supporters section, and have more of our girls playing and appreciating soccer.

My wife and i ended up actually chatting about almost the same issue last weekennd. We have in no way able to complete the discussion or to arrive at common ground. I don't know what it's nevertheless, but hey - perhaps that's how your life has items in store for us. We appreciate you covering this particular subject for sure. It got all of us discussing again and I think we will finally get to the similiar result in one way or the other.

[...] It’s a big night for both of Philadelphia’s soccer fans. The Chester Philadelphia Union kick off against the Seattle Sounders tonight on ESPN2. Now there are some things that I can’t stand about soccer, primarily the flailing. It’s like 11 Danny Ainge’s whingin and crying and falling all game for both teams, and it makes the sport almost unwatchable. And yet, I’m not going to write off the Union just yet. While I am not crazy about the sport itself, there is something clubbishly nerdy about soccer fans that I find wonderful. When they start talking soccer it’s like they are talking a different language, and they talk about it with an earnest geekiness that is usually reserved for Star Trek Conventions. Even better, they sing, which is way cooler than the tired “(Insert city or player here) sucks” chant you hear at any other Philadelphia sports match. I think it is a crying shame that the Phillies don’t have a fight song after 127 years, but the Union already have 5. [...]
